Victorian Mahogany Dining Table Diners Tables Furniture
Prior to the Victorian times it was the custom to have several smaller tables in the home. As industrialisation increased both affluence (amongst some) and leisure time, the custom of eating together as a family around a dining table became more popular. This lead to the development of the extending Victorian dining table.
These tables worked on a leaf system – a leaf is a section of wood that can be added to a table as situation requires. The table would expand, sometimes by using a wind up mechanism that required the turning of a handle at one end of the table. At either end of the table the two E Ends enclosed the leaves. Some tables have 4-6 leaves – the average size of a leaf is 24 inches.
Victorian dining tables were commonly crafted from mahogany. A typical motif of the Victorian dining table is the bulbous hand turned leg. The tables are normally on castors so can be moved around tables. Original period Victorian tables are sought after and command good prices. Good quality reproduction tables are also popular – they last for generations hence making them a great heirloom. Chippendale, Regency, Prince of Wales, Gothic, Sheraton and Queen Anne chairs look great around the table.
