The earliest type of dining table was the Trestle table used in the Middle Ages. It consisted of a long wooden plank resting on trestles, easy to move around and dismantle to the side of the hall as required.
By the mid 16th century however it became normal for the master and his family to eat in a separate room and more permanent tables evolved. The term Resfectory table has been applied to these early solid tables since the 19th century.
Style varied but such tables were popular all over Europe. Oak was the most common wood used and the tables are always very chunky and great for withstanding the vigours of daily family use. Oak refectory tables are a great family dining piece and look great with rustic farmhouse style chairs such as Windsor, ladderback or spindleback chairs, or perhaps a bench. Refectory tables with barley twist legs were also common and popular.
